Nail Fungus Infections

Though catching toenail fungus is easy, but getting rid of it is certainly the most difficult part of the problem. You can catch this infection from anywhere — public gyms, swimming pools, and shower stalls. Toe nail fungus easily spreads from one person to another or from one body part to the other. Therefore, athletes and people, who can’t avoid wearing tight-fitting shoes or dresses, are often affected with toe nail fungus the most.

You can also develop nail fungus due to an abnormality in pH level of the skin, or not properly drying off the feet after taking bath or physical exercise.

If you look at the nails of a person with toenail fungus, you may notice that they turn yellow or brown in color. They also appear extra thick and overgrown due to the presence of fungi. A person with nail fungus is likely face problems in wearing shoes and his or her feet may start smelling awfully. The sneaks are also visible on the sides of the nail, and it may come off easily.

As the nail fungus often flourishes in warm, moist areas, including spas, showers, and swimming pool, it is strongly recommended to wash your feet and dry them properly. You should also wear cotton socks as they absorb moisture and help you keep your feet dry. You should also avoid sharing towel, washcloths, shoes or any other personal items with people, who have already been infected with the toe nail fungus. Other than this, you should trim your nails regularly, and smoothen the edges using a nail filer.

As majority of oral antifungals come with certain side-effects, and thus home remedies for toe nail fungus are more popular than prescription medications.

There are various household products having anti-fungal properties, such as listerine mouthwash. Put some drops of listerine mouthwash in warm water, and rub your toes gently with the solution. This powerful antiseptic may leave your toes looking healthy. Other than listerine, you can also use tea tree oil and lavender oil in equal proportion and rub the solution gently on the affected area using a cotton swab. Various studies indicate that Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic and help you fight the infection and prevent skin irritation. Then, you can also mix 2 drops of Oregano essential oil and one tablespoon of olive oil. You should apply this mixture on infected toes regularly for around three weeks. Oregano essential oil contains antibacterial, antiseptic, analgesic, and antifungal properties, hence helps in curing nail fungus.

Other than using effective home-based or commercial medications to treat toe nail fungus, you should also pay attention to your diet. It can significantly help you curing toe nail fungus. If you are suffering from toe nail fungus, you should include more probiotics or good bacteria in your diet, such as Yogurt and kefir as they may help you eliminate fungus from your body. You should avoid refined carbohydrates, such as sugar, dairy products, and vinegar.

While conventional treatment for nail fungus is long-term and costly, nail fungus can recur if the medications are stopeed in the middle of the treatment. Therefore, you must ensure that you use an effective rememdy to cure toe nail fungus.
